People driving through the Belmont and Highton area are being told they don’t need to panic if they hear the emergency alert this afternoon.
The area is set to be used to test the new AusAlert system around 2pm, with a warning alert set to play through smartphones of those in the area.
While the alert may catch some off guard, we’re being reminded it’s a test, and not a cause for genuine alarm.
Chris Miller from the Department of Transport says it’s essential that drivers act calmly and continue to adhere to the law.
“Remember the same mobile driving laws apply as always,” he says.
“There is no need to check your phone, it’s just a test of the system.
“Keep your eyes on the road and continue to drive as normal.”
Earlier this week Emergency Management Commissioner Tim Wiebusch said people in the area should expect to hear a ten second alert on their phones.
“If you’ve got an iPhone or Android device – we would expect that your phone would start vibrating, then it will have a very unusual audible tone, like a siren that’ll go off on your phone for around 10 seconds.”
He’s also advised anyone who has concerns about receiving the alert should have their phones in flight mode, or switched off.
