Most of Lake Connewarre will be closed to duck hunters this season.
The shortened season got underway at 8am today and will finish on June 5.
The Victorian government rejected a parliamentary inquiry recommendation earlier this year to ban duck hunting.
Game Management Authority (GMA) has closed 32 wetlands across Victoria during the season to protect threatened species including the Orange-bellied parrot.
While Lake Connewarre is closed to hunters, Reedy Lakes and Hospital Swamps will be open.
Lake Murdeduke State Game Reserve near Winchelsea is also closed for the season.
GMA Chief Graeme Ford also reminded hunters there was a daily bag limit of up to six birds.
“There’s two of the species that would normally be game ducks, but aren’t allowed to hunted,” he said.
“That’s the Blue-winged Shoveller and the Hardhead.
“Of course we expect hunters to behave and follow all the rules and regulations.”
