A local service helping those going through social isolation, homelessness and hardship is receiving support itself from the City of Greater Geelong.
The council has committed $165,000 over three years for The Outpost, to help it continue providing meals, support and connection for those doing it tough.
Data shows more than 1500 people experience homelessness on any given night across the region.
The Outpost has also experienced a 50 per cent increase in demand over the last two years.
It provides meals each night, and lunches three days a week.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the money the council has committed in the budget, recognised the role the Outpost plays.
“The Outpost is a lifeline for many people, providing not only food and practical assistance, but a place where people feel welcome, respected and supported,” Cr Kontelj said.
“Addressing homelessness requires a shared effort across all levels of government, community organisations and the broader community.
“We call for bipartisan funding commitments ahead of the Victorian election for The Outpost and similar organisations, so they can continue delivering their vital work with confidence.”
