Preparations are well underway for Sunday’s Socceroos opener, with Geelong’s live site at Johnstone Park ready to go.
Having initially been discussed to occur at the Geelong Convention Centre, local fans will be instead in the wide open to watch the Socceroos start their tournament against Türkiye.
The game kicking off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj says it’s exciting to have a place for fans to come together.
“It’s set to be a sunny day which helps,” he says.
“We’re hoping to see a really string crowd at the event, so people can head down with their chairs, picnic blankets and eskys, and anything else they need.”
The mayor says he expects fans will take the opportunity to watch together.
“There’s definitely a real sense of anticipation across the region,” he says.
“It’s obviously an incredible event, and we love that we can share it as a community.
“Hopefully we see a thousand or so people, even more attend the live site.”
