A special zone has been set up outside the Geelong and Corio police stations, allowing items bought and sold online to be exchanged.
Thirty five stations across Victoria are part of the Safer Exchange Site program, including Werribee.
They say the zones have lighting and CCTV cameras, providing a safer alternative to meeting a stranger in a home or car park.
A six-month trial of the site found thefts and robberies from online sales had dropped, while officers at the stations saw people exchanging items on a regular basis.
Commander Tim Tully said exchange zones were popular in other countries as online marketplaces continued to increase in popularity.
“This initiative is all about police getting on the front foot to ensure an emerging crime theme doesn’t become an embedded trend,” he said.
“While these sites are a safer alternative than meeting someone at your home or in a dimly lit area with no CCTV, we still encourage people to consider the risks of meeting a person they’ve never met before.
“Police suggest meeting during daylight hours if possible and bringing someone with you to the exchange”
