Sarah’s new leadership role

Former Geelong councillor Sarah Mansfield has been elected Co-Deputy leader of the Victorian Greens.

She will share the role with Sam Hibbins, while Ellen Sandell was voted unanimously as Greens Leader following a partyroom meeting on Tuesday morning.

The member for Western Victoria has been announced as leader of the party in the Legislative Council, where the minor party holds the balance of power.

Dr Mansfield served as a Geelong councillor between 2017 and 2022, becoming the first Greens MP to represent regional Victoria.

She said it was important for cities including Geelong and coastal and farming communities were represented in the parliament.

“I entered politics because I am passionate about addressing inequality, including regional disadvantage,” Dr Mansfield said.

“The Greens are here to give a voice to all those who are feeling let down by politicians.

“Labor has no vision and no policies that prioritise our health and the health of our environment.

“People want an alternative to the duopoly of Labor and Liberal – the Greens are that alternative.”
