UPDATE: Geelong’s council has responded to the claims.
The State Government has stepped in to take over housing projects across Geelong, announcing they’ll fast track four Precinct Structure Plans (PSP).
Spring Street said the decision will aim to unlock more than 23,000 new homes in the Batesford North, McCanns Lane/Merrawarp Road, Batesford South, and Heales Road East PSPs.
They’ve taken aim at the local council, claiming the plans have been sitting on the City of Greater Geelong’s desk, yet to hand in plans due to start being submitted from 2023.
Our region’s expected to be in need of 128,600 new homes by 2051, with the Planning Minister claiming their decision will unlock homes almost a decade ahead of council’s schedule.
“We’ve been clear that if councils aren’t delivering, we’re prepared to step in and unlock the homes Victorians need,” Sonya Kilkenny said.
The Minister for Housing and Building said the project includes two 3D printed social homes, with a delivery time of three months each.
“We need to pull every lever to build more homes, and that means embracing new tech like 3D printed housing,” Nick Staikos said.
The Premier said it’s part of their broader plan for increased housing across the state.
“More homes means more opportunity for young people to live near the things they need and the people they love,” Premier Jacinta Allan said.
The news has been welcomed by local MPs.
“These new homes will help more people live close to the jobs, schools and services our city has to offer,” Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said.
“We’re not just building homes, we’re building communities – planning for the roads, parks and services future residents will rely on,” Lara MP Ella George said.
