A big election pledge from the state opposition to ease public transport congestion in the western growth corridor.
It promised $1.7 billion to introduce the state’s first hybrid electric trains on the Wyndham Vale and Melton lines within four years.
The trains would carry up to 12-hundred passengers, effectively doubling the capacity of the current V/Line diesel services.
Shadow public transport minister Matthew Guy said it was an essential move.
“Suburban passengers need suburban trains,” he said.
“Our hybrid suburban trains will deliver metro-quality services now and are able to run seamlessly across both electrified and non-electrified train lines.
“The only way to deliver the quality train services Melton and Wyndham Vale communities deserve is to change the government this November.”
