Two men are in hospital – one of them in a critical condition – after a shooting in the Wyndham suburb of Tarneit.
Police were called to Friendship Drive just after midnight after receiving reports of gunshots.
An initial search drew a blank before a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the hand was found in Tarneit Road.
A short time later a second man was discovered in Derrimut Road, about five kilometres away.
He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries to the upper body.
This morning he is listed as critical but stable.
Police have taped off the carpark of a McDonalds store at the corner of Derrimut and Leakes Road in Tarneit, as they examine two white Mercedes Benz cars.
One has its rear bumper hanging off and is surrounded by police crime scene markers. A pair of shoes and other items are strewn across the ground between the parked vehicles.
Police are now trying to work out what happened, and what might have led to the incident.
