Viva Energy will refine and supply aviation fuel for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in a deal estimated at $2.7 billion over six years.

The deal to supply F44 fuel for navy helicopters is valued at $450 million per year, and could be extended to 12 years.

Defence currently imports the specialist fuel that has not been produced in Australian since 2013.

“Coming after years of declining local oil refining and fuel production, this will be good for Australia’s defence, good for Australia’s energy security and good for Australian jobs,” Defence Industy Minister Pat Conroy said.

Viva is one of two refiners left in Australia, the second is Ampol in Queensland.

“The Government is working hard to build a resilient fuel supply for Defence and to strengthen Australia’s national security – and this domestic fuel supply contract will contribute to this,” Mr Conroy said.

“We are really pleased about the difference this will make in the regional centre of Geelong in Victoria.”
