Whale carcass leads to beach closure

Bells Beach and Winkipop remain closed today due to shark concerns.

Sharks have been drawn closer to the beach in the past day due to a whale carcass on the beach.

A warning was initially sent out just after 2pm yesterday that there was an increased risk of sharks.

Images and video of the whale carcass both in the water and having washed up on the beach have been posted by members of the public on social media.

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action said it had begun work to clear the area.

“A DEECA Incident Management Team is working with Wadawurrung traditional owners, the land manager GORCAPA, and other stakeholders to to plan for its removal.”

Locals are being asked to avoid the area.
