Helicopters are flying over Geelong and the Surf Coast, taking a close look at powerlines.

Powercor is holding its annual bushfire mitigation and vegetation management program.

Crews are using technology to scan the distance between powerlines and tree branches, to determine which vegetation needs to be cut back.

The company says the annual data determines which areas show faster growth.

Ayce Cordy from Powercor said it was all about keeping power safe and reliable for homes and businesses.

“Our work is about reducing the risk of trees and branches coming into contact with powerlines, which can lead to power outages and fires,” he said.

“These flights are just part of our extensive work to keep the network safe and reliable for our communities.”

Last year, teams cut more than 500,000 trees and shrubs.
