Police investigate Belmont fire

Emergency services have responded to a building fire in Belmont, among several suspicious fires in the suburb on Sunday morning.

Crews were called to a shop along Stephen Street just after 5am Sunday morning finding it on fire.

It’s understood the shop is an old supermarket which has been abandoned for some time and was vacant at the time of the fire.

The blaze caused moderate damage to the two storey brick building, investigators are on scene with the fire treated as suspicious.

Meantime, police say there were four separate tree fires in close proximity on residential nature strips, including two in Johnson Street, a third in Laura Avenue and a fourth in Davis Street.

Locals in the surrounding neighbourhood in Belmont, Highton and Grovedale were told they may see smoke in the area.

No reports of injuries have been made and investigations are continuing.
