The future of Big Bash games at GMHBA Stadium remains unclear following this week’s merger announcement.

The Melbourne Renegades – who have played games at GMHBA Stadium since 2017 – are set to merge with cross-town rivals the Melbourne Stars to form a new Melbourne BBL license.

The new side is set to play under what was the Stars’ license.

The second license – previously held by the Renegades – is currently expected to be sold off to private buyers.

The proposed merger is likely to see home games for the new look side play at the MCG instead of Marvel Stadium.

But while discussions around a new identity for the team are ongoing, as well as rosters and sponsorship, the agreement to play games in Geelong is one factor of the new agreement that remains unclear.

Kardinia Park trust CEO Gerard Griffin says they are continuing to have talks with Cricket Victoria, who is set to retain one of the licenses.

“Kardinia Park Stadium Trust has always been committed to sourcing and enabling as much diverse content at GMHBA Stadium as possible,” he told Geelong Broadcasters.

“We continue to have conversations with Cricket Victoria and welcome potential cricket matches at GMHBA Stadium.”

The Renegades have a five wins and six losses record with one no-result at the venue.
